In September , he died of poisoning from noxious fumes while trying to rescue two men from a cistern in Cranston, Rhode Island. His death was witnessed by his brother George , who wrote an account of it shortly thereafter. George married Anstis Ramsey d. Most entries in it refer to the privateering activities and shipboard life of the vessels on which Zuriel Waterman served, but entries were also written when the author was at home between voyages. When cruising, the author often made note of latitude and longitude and the names of various vessels, foreign and native, encountered while at sea. There are detailed descriptions of ports visited and close encounters with enemy ships.
